Man, while on earth, lives in bondage to his body, to the limitations of materiality, and to his own lower self. But his bondage is not perpetual, for during the course of many lives he undergoes a series of initiations which finally free him from his thralldom. The teacher, White Eagle, speaks of four major initiations, related to the four elements, which in their turn correspond to different aspects of man's own being. Every experience of his life, from the least to the most profound and far reaching, forms a major part of one or other of these four major initiations, by which man eventually attains mastery over himself, mastery over the circumstances of his life, and mastery over the very substance of matter itself.
